  • Skin Face Mapping

  • Following on from my post about my wedding skin prep (you can see my post here) I wanted to look further into acne and what your spots mean.

What are comadones & cystic acne?

Comodones = Black Heads & Whitheads

Cystic Acne = Spots that are more like lumps that you can feel under the skin. When they are visible can look red, swollen and are generally quite painful.

    What does Noncomedogenic mean?

This is a term applied to oils, lotions, and skin creams that do not block pores. Noncomedogenic products are also sometimes referred to as non-occlusive. The theory behind using lotions that are noncomedogenic is that it won’t block pores, and won’t cause spots.

Have you ever wondered why your spots appear in certain areas and what this means? The ancient art of Face Mapping can help identify the cause of blemishes by splitting the face into zones.

    face mapping lucy jayne makeup

    Zone 1 & 2 Forehead

Spots on the forehead tend to indicate a stressed bladder or digestive system.
To help ease this, try increasing your intake or water, green tea and fibre-rich foods that help dispel toxins and excess waste. Contact spots are also common in this area where grease or products from the hair can creep onto the face, so try and keep your hair up and out of the way.

    Zone 3

Alcohol and dairy are said to be the main causes for spots in this area as well as reactions to food allergies. This is t-zone acne. More sebaceous glands in this area means bigger pores which can lead to excess oil production, comodones and inflamed spots.

    Zone 4 & 10, 6 & 8

Spots close to your ear and even dark circles around the eyes can be caused by dehydration. Make sure you keep well hydrated throughout the day by drinking, at least, eight glasses of water a day and avoiding coffee, tea and salt whenever possible.

    Zone 7

This area is skin is full of dilated pores so make sure your make-up brushes and anything that you bring close to your face are kept clean and products are noncomedogenic. Try to reduce high blood pressure for an internal solution to clearing spots in this area.

    Zones 5 & 9

Stress, too much sugar and sometimes dirty mobile phones can be the cause of cheek spots. Spots plus a red flushing on the cheeks may also be a sign of Rosacea.

    Zones 11 & 13

Typical for us ladies, this is the area that will be most affected because of our hormones. In these areas you will have more lumpy cystic spots that will linger and sometimes leave a bit of scaring. Another interesting point, breakouts in this area indicate when you are ovulating (and on which side).

    Zone 12

Stomach, if your diet has been loaded with rich and heavy foods then consider a detox or adding more fibre to your diet.

    Zone 14

Spots here can indicate that your body is trying to fight off an illness. Take it easy if you begin feeling unwell and drink plenty of water to give your body some time to relax

Please note: The acne causes listed for each facial region are general guidelines and may not apply to everyone.

  • My Wedding Skin Diary

  • My impending wedding day is getting very close and, in my experience as a wedding makeup artist one if the main worries I encounter from my brides is troublesome skin and what skin care should they use. As an adult that has suffered with acne this is certainly something I can completely relate to. ANY event, occasion, this is always my main worry so considering my big day is just under 2 months away, I am feeling the pressure and feel like what I am doing isn’t working!

I have had plenty of stress and worry in the run up to my wedding to know that there are more important things to stress about… But still this is something that I can try to control and make the best of it.

    Starting from today:

I know what terrible skin is (here is my post from when my skin was really bad) and at the moment my skin isn’t terrible. The trouble I am having is my hormones, stress levels, and picking the blighter’s! Every day I will have one or two spots but when I am hormonal my chin and sometimes my cheeks erupt in nasty cysts or whiteheads and when I am stressed my back then decides to join in and before I know it I have spots spreading from my shoulder blades, to my neck and hairline. Not the best bridal look if I am intending on wearing my hair up!

What I try to tell my brides is don’t do anything crazy, don’t try new fancy products, and whilst there is time look into antibiotic creams, don’t pick, don’t squeeze…. I think it’s time I worked on my willpower and I start listening to my own advise.

My stress levels have calmed down a bit and with that my back acne has too. I would find myself picking and scratching my back without even realising!! This obviously caused a bit if scarring and spread bacteria so the spots kept coming back. I made sure I exfoliated my back with a face cloth and my cleanser, and would then moisturise it. It seems silly but I neglected my back because I couldn’t see it. As soon as I started to treat my back in the same way as my face it began to clear up. I would also apply my antibiotic cream at night.

In the last two months I have started noting my bad skin days in a diary and I think this has helped understand my skins behaviour better than ever. My skin is at its worst in the week and a half before my period, fizzling out during and a few days after. Mainly on my chin, but a few nasty ones pop up on my forehead and cheeks.

I use an antibiotic differin cream at night and this helps control my skin (I may go back to my GP to find out if there is anything else I can use for during the day) every little helps eh!

Morning and night I use Bioderma Sebium Foam Cleanser and moisturise my face and body with Aqueous Cream (it’s a simple non-comedogenic emollient).

Morning I use the above but before applying my moisturiser I apply ARK’s Skin Defence Regenerating Serum. It containers lots of essential vitamins, antioxidants and lipids that regenerate and renew the skin. One of the key ingredients is Allantoin which soothes, heals and repairs damaged skin and scaring. This has helped with my leftover acne scarring.

I have recently found out that I am product sensitive so as a makeup artist this makes things a little tricky! I do try to stick with what works for me, but I do love to try new products. A few weeks ago I purchased all new skin care products, (all premium brands) a cleanser, moisturised, mask and exfoliator. After using these lovely products for a week my skin became dry, flaky and the many, many spots that followed took a long time to go! Needless to say I stopped using them straight away and I will carry on using what I was using before… If it’s not broke why try to fix it? When you have skin like me, it seems like a great idea to do some pre wedding pampering but in reality I need to tread carefully.

    lucy jayne makeup skincare

Here are my tips for better skin!

Over cleansing strips natural oils which leads to over production of sebum, blocking pores making acne worse. Try using gentle cleansers like Bioderma Sebum control or if that’s too much opt for a hyper sensitive cleanser like Dermalogica’s UltraCalming Cleanser.

If you are having a breakout, and you are finding it hard to manage its time to book an option tent with your GP. Ask for Duac, it’s an antibiotic cream that breaks down comadones or Differin, this is a retinoid cream used at night that increases cell renewal and prevents pores from clogging (this is what I use). In extreme cases you may need antibiotics in tablet form, and be patient it won’t work over night sometimes it can take over a month for you to start seeing results but it will be worth the wait.

    Scrubs and face masks.
It’s better to keep things simple so don’t use anything that could aggravate your skin. It may be better to stick with cleansing and moisturiser but an exception and one of the gentlest exfolianters I have found and love using is Dermalogica Daily Microfoliant it’s gentle enough to use everyday and contains salicylic acid and rice enzymes that micro-exfoliate dead cells, instantly leaving skin smoother and brighter.

Don’t be afraid of moisturising, if you don’t your sebaceous glands will have to work harder to hydrate your skin and as a result your skin may become oily and shiny. Go for a moisturiser that works with your skin.

Facials are great but if they are too indulgent it may have the opposite effect when you break out from the products and massage. Instead go for a no nonsense treatment that will help clear up acne (also it’s better to book a course of 4-6 treatments as you may not see the benefit from a one off) try a course of salicylic acid peels. It removes comadones and dead skin cells.

  • Inside Out Beauty Event at LFW

  • I am relatively new to blogging so it was a lovely surprise to be invited to the London Grace Belgravia for an exclusive ‘Inside Out Beauty’ press event with ARK Skincare and The Elixir Clinic.

I am already aware of the Skincare brand as I have quite a few ARK products in my professional kit. I love what this unique brand represents, everyone’s skin is completely individual and the products are prescribed to target your personal skin concearns. I have been using their Age Prepare, Age Maintain and Age Repair moisturisers on my bridal clients.

    ARK’s Ethos
“ARK Age Aware Skincare is a revolutionary way if treating your skin through every life stage. We don’t believe in skin types at ARK. You’re unique and so is your skin. Skin reflects lifestyle choices, stress levels and hormonal changes. The products your skin needs to look its best will be unique to you, different to those of your best friend, daughter and mother.
Our Skincare is prescribed by skin age as we know there are two key periods in the ageing process when a dramatic shift in hormones production changes the way the body works.”

    Amazing ARK goody bag!

Amazing products in the ARK goody bag!

The Elixir Clinic was something completely new to me. I have heard of various Celebs and Supermodels having detox infusions through a drip, and when I have seen their Instagram and Twitter photos it looks quite extreme. Like they are getting ready for an operation! After talking to the specialists and Co-founder this eradicated my ignorance and helped my greater understanding of what it does and how it benefits your long term health.

The clinics IV infusions range from a bespoke combination of vitamins, nutrients and minerals that detox, help with fatigue, aid weight loss, help anti ageing, hair loss, and improves skin condition… And this is only the tip of the iceberg!
Infusions are the administration of nutrients by intravenous delivery and is used to help treat a broad spectrum of health conditions while aiding nutrition and the immune system. The key benefit of intravenous administration over creams and supplements are that your body can only absorb 0-10%, whereas when its IV your body absorbs 100% of the good stuff so you will really benefit in the long term.

“The Elixir Clinic believe and seek to deliver to our clients “inside out” beauty. With the newest ideas for long term health and well-being. The Vitamins Infusions are the most effective, as a natural and safe detox method for sustaining the long-term well-being.”

  • Win Your Wedding Makeup

  • You may remember back in January I decided to run a competition for my Facebook followers. It was to win your wedding makeup!! It was a fun competition to run and so many lovely brides entered. When the competition closed I sat on my own, folded up all of the brides names on little pieces of paper, gave the bowl a little swoosh around and then picked the winner!

The winning bride Hayley actually had no idea because her best friend and Maid of Honour Ria, had entered in the hope she could surprise the bride with this fab prize!

I was later told that Ria found out she had won just as Hayley was trying on her wedding dress! What perfect timing!!!

Hayley was a classic bride and as a fellow glasses wearer she wanted to make her eyes really dramatic as they would be framed by her cool specs. She looked so glamorous!

  • Beauty on the Beach - Sea Bathing Machine!

  • I feel like its been so long since my last blog post… Blame it on crazy wedding season! My other half is watching the Football (yawn!) so I thought I would bring something very cool to your attention!!

I live on the coast and feel very lucky that I do, especially as the beach is such a novelty to all of my clients that come to my home. Every time they ask ‘How close are we to the beach?’ and ‘We have to make the most of being by the seaside and get fish and chips’ I love it!

My neighbouring towns are Whitstable on one side and Margate on the other, both very iconic seaside destinations.

In Margate there is a lovely seaweed and perfume brand Haeckels and they’re working on a project to raise £30,000 in order to build the worlds first sea bathing sauna machine!!

    Sea bathing sauna machine margate

They have taken the heritage of Margate’s sea bathing machines and fused it with a state of the art sauna and treatment room; in essence this will be a mobile spa where users can use the sea as a plunge pool.

The machine itself is not for the benefit of Haeckels it will be a stand-alone unit to create interesting jobs for locals and create a moveable shore side space for local practitioners to rent.

The idea is of Dom Bridge’s who runs and owns ‘Haeckels’, a seaweed skincare and perfume business.

Mr Bridges says, “The knowledge of the health benefits of the Margate coast and seawater has been lost and forgotten about since its Victorian heyday.

“By reminding the town of its rich health-based heritage, we think that we will encourage regeneration and give a spark to the community that could to bringing the town back to a mecca of natural health.

“Being run by members of the community is important to us as it means that the profits will go back into the local economy which could mean that by creating the sea bathing machine the locals will have more employment, prospects and an improved outlook on where they live.”

Mr Bridges has commissioned a local architect and carpenter to design and construct the machine which should be ready next summer.

For more information or make a pledge, visit the Sea Bathing Machine Sauna Kickstarter page.

30,000 pledges of £1 gets us there or 3,000 pledges of £10 every penny counts so please get involved and lets give Margate another amazing attraction!

  • The Festival Beach Bride - Styled Shoot

  • At the end of last Summer Kelly and Laura (Festival Brides Blog) organised the Summeriest of all bridal shoots. Right now I am looking through these beautiful and vibrant images and it just makes me feel soooo ready for the Summer…

The set styling of the sand dunes was incredible, such beautiful colours to play with! Lots of peachy-coral, turquoise, lilac and pinks. The colours were perfectly complimented by the different dress designs. The first dress was a bespoke design from Wilden Bride the second was a boho maxi from Ell and Cee and the last was a sequin delight by Sarah Seven. (Note to self: DO NOT try on any of the above just before a very tall gorgeous model!)

The makeup and hair looks were always going to be push the traditional bridal boundaries. Perfect fo…

Claudia had quite curly hair but it needed to be ‘beached up’ a bit. I used a curling wand to create more defined waves as apposed to messy curls and then  used a surf spray to create texture.

The first of the two makeup looks was quite vibrant. I used lots of coral shades with a hint of red and metallic gold to create a ‘burnt orange’ eye shadow. I kept Claudia’s skin natural and dewy as her freckles looked so lovely – they needed to show, I used a coral blush to give a hint of sun kissed peachy skin. The sun was starting to set and we still needed to shoot the last Sarah Seven dress, so for the last look I was given 20 minutes to change makeup and get our lovely model back to the beach! No pressure… I kept her hair the same and maxed up the makeup! I applied loads of gold glitter around her eyes and also on her arms and hands. To give extra emphasis to her eyes I also carefully applied gold leaf along the crease. Looking back I wish I had used more (I could ALWAYS use more) but never mind, I think Claudia still rocked the look of a bridal sun goddess!

Here are some of the beautiful images to help inspire you for your special day – Especially if you are a Festival Beach Bride!

  • Chic Bridal Makeup

  • Their are so many brides that are inspiring me at the moment. I am getting ready for my own wedding day in November and I must say that I am loving my job at the moment. I love it anyway but when I can talk weddings and get ideas from my cool brides, it makes it so much more fun.

I am keeping my wedding ideas quite secret (don’t worry I will be shouting about it once its happened!) but for now here is one of my recent weddings that I absolutely adore. Bride Sarah was effortlessly chic and was so much fun. Her excitement and joy was captured perfectly by Benjamin Toms (who is also my wedding photographer) he took the most beautiful photos of her big day.

I still haven’t decided on my own hair and makeup and yes I will be doing my bridal makeup, but I think timeless with a hint of glamour is always a good look! Watch this space…

  • Summer Boho Bridal Makeup

  • Back in April, I got a late night (slightly panicked) text from Vicki Lord (Bridal Hair Extraordinaire!) Basically her bride the following day had been let down by her makeup artist and was I available?… I was! And that doesn’t happen that often so I was really glad I was able to help out.

The venue was at the Port Lympne Mansion and all Vicki said was that the bride (Sarah) wanted to go for a dramatic look as she was having very creative Avant-Garde hair. I must admit that when I arrived it felt like chaos in the room that everyone was getting ready, there was stuff everywhere! Bridesmaids were doing the table plan settings whilst the others were being filmed for the ‘Marryoke’ Wedding Video. All that being said Sarah was sat having her hair styled by Vicki, super chilled and enjoying herself! I loved it!!

You will see from the photos that her hair was beautifully extravagant, and although Sarah gave me free reign on her makeup I still wanted it to compliment all of the different elements and not to compete with it.

I thought about it for a moment and decided that as there was a lot of colour in her hair that I would need to create a strong makeup look but instead of going with bright colour I muted it down slightly with gold and bronze shades. I think this gave more of a contemporary boho feel but it needed drama, so I glammed it up by using a golden glitter on her eyes and applied big dramatic lashes.

This was a fab wedding to be a part of and I am so excited to share these pictures with you!

p.s. Sarah may have booked me the night before but she didn’t get her dress until the day before the wedding day!!!

  • Foundation and Primer = Flawless Bridal Skin

  • The most important thing that I try to achieve in every one of my makeup jobs is great looking flawless skin!! As a makeup artist the most important thing for me is to be able make the bridal skin look beautiful, not do crazy ‘off the wall’ makeup that will go out of fashion very quickly. I like to create a look that is timeless and this ALWAYS starts with the skin.

This is the question I get asked most. How do I get my skin to look better? This will always start with skin prep. Cleanse, moisturise and prime. Then I suit the foundation to my clients skin type and condition, Yes some people may need a little more coverage but this doesn’t need to be heavy or caky, and others may have blemishes, pigmentation, dry or oily skin. I take all of this into consideration as not all foundations or primers suit all skin types, so sometimes it may take a little time to find the perfect coverage and when that box is ticked it means that your makeup and base will last so much longer!!

Here are some of my past brides and list of products I used to create their long lasting primer and foundation combo!

Charli: MAC Strobe Primer and MAC Face + Body Foundation = Light to Medium Coverage with a ‘dewy’ finish.

modern bridal makeup by lucy jayne

Kate: Smashbox Photo Finish Foundation Primer and Estee Lauder Doublewear = Medium to full coverage with a matt even finish.

Jenny: Smashbox Photo Finish Foundation Primer and MAC Studio Fix Fluid Foundation = Medium to full coverage, pore refined and matt finish.

Sarina: MAC Strobe Primer and MAC Studio Fix Fluid Foundation (small amount of the Strobe Cream mixed in with foundation) = Med coverage and slightly ‘dewy’ finish.

    asian bridal makeup in kent

Oh and finally I just wanted to touch on HD Makeup (HD = High-Definition). This is something I get asked about a lot because when you are being photographed on your wedding day you want to be ‘HD ready’ right?…. But what does this really mean??

Lots of brands now have a High-Defination products. So does it mean that by using something that is branded as HD that it will look better and last longer? NOPE! High Definition Makeup is not a brand of makeup, it is actually a technique of the application. This means using a great pore refining primer and matching your foundation perfectly to your skin tone. Blending so there are no heavy areas or streaks but the finish looks like real skin – you can’t see where the foundation starts and the natural skin ends. Pores aren’t really visible, blemishes  are carefully hidden and the powder that is used to set everything is invisible.

In conclusion its how we all want to look, everyday but especially on your wedding day. L J xxx
